Properly Storing Skincare

Updated: Jan 17

Properly storing skincare products is crucial for maintaining their efficacy and prolonging their shelf life. You can drastically improve skincare items' performance by understanding how to store them. Let's explore the key factors to consider when storing skincare products and give you some practical tips.

Light and temperature:

Skincare products are sensitive to temperature and light, which can degrade their ingredients and reduce their effectiveness over time. To maintain skincare product potency, store them away from direct sunlight in a cool, dry place. Heat and sunlight can accelerate the breakdown of active ingredients, resulting in product spoilage and reduced efficacy. And skincare isn't cheap, darn it! That's the last thing we want. A cabinet or drawer AWAY from windows or areas prone to temperature change is an ideal place to store your skincare products. Please don't store your products on your bathroom window sill or out in a hot, steamy bathroom.

Airtight Containers:

When skincare products are exposed to air, they can deteriorate quickly, especially if they contain ingredients such as vitamin C and retinol. By keeping air and light out, airtight containers help preserve the quality of skincare products over time. This ensures that the products are effective and safe for use. As a result, these containers minimize air and bacteria contamination, ensuring the formulation of the product remains intact. Please, please, please shut your products tightly after use and do not leave them uncapped for an extended period of time, as this can cause evaporation and contamination.

Moisture should be avoided:

Moisture is the enemy of many skincare products, especially those containing water-based formulas. Moisture can also cause water-based formulas to separate and become less effective, because it weakens the bonds between the ingredients. The presence of moisture can encourage the growth of bacteria, resulting in product spoilage and possible irritation of the skin. Make sure your skincare items are not kept in humid areas like bathrooms or damp cabinets. Consider storing them in a temperature-controlled, dry area, such as your bedroom.

Organizing and rotating:

Organizing your skincare products not only makes them easier to find, but helps maintain their freshness. You'll also be more likely to use your skincare products if they're organized rather than placed at the back of the shelf. Make it easy to access your products by categorizing them according to categories, such as cleansers, serums, moisturizers, and masks. Ensure you check the expiration dates on your skincare products and use them before they expire by adopting a first-in, first-out approach. As a result, you will be able to maximize their effectiveness and avoid wasting your money on products that are past their prime.

Skincare while traveling:

When traveling, you should take extra precautions to protect your skincare products. For optimum potency and minimum risk of leakage, invest in travel-sized containers or decant your products into smaller, airtight containers. Travel-friendly containers should be placed inside a waterproof case or bag that offers adequate protection from temperature changes and accidental bumps.

Your skincare products will remain potent and deliver optimal results if you consider factors such as temperature, light exposure, airtight containers, moisture control, and organization. You can enhance your skincare routine and make the most of your favourite products by following these simple yet effective storage tips.

Remember: look after yourselves and your skincare products.
